The VACreach program aims to improve the sexual health of gay, bi, Trans and other same-sex attracted men across three broad areas.
- VACreach Social Venues: hotels and nightclubs;
- VACreach Online, Sex On Premises venues and smart phone applications; and,
- A collaboration between VAC and Harm Reduction Victoria’s DanceWize program.
Potential male and female volunteers receive generic training enabling them to talk to men in a variety of locations.
Specific training is provided to enable gay, bi and Trans men to chat with other same sex attracted men to provide sexual health information and resources both print-based and online in:
- Sex On Premises Venues;
- Gay cruising websites; and,
- Popular cruising smart phone applications.
On Thursday 10 March 2011 VAC staff involved with our weekly radio show Well, Well, Well on JOY 94.9 (currently broadcast on Monday night’s from 8.00-9.00pm) interviewed Nathan, a volunteer with the VACreach Online team. In the interview, Nathan explains how VACreach, known at the time as Outreach, is undertaken online and the types of issues that men in these spaces talk about. Listen to the interview at www.joy.org.au. Note: The interview with Nathan starts 7 minutes into the podcast.
Additional training by Harm Reduction Victoria is provided to volunteers suited to the specific environments where the DanceWize events are located.
Training is conducted regularly 2-3 times a year. For more information please contact the Volunteer Coordinator.
It is essential that potential volunteers for VACreach undertake a selection interview prior to the commencement of training.
It is desirable that potential volunteers understand the nature of the settings that these interactions take place.
