The Peer Education Program offers several six-week workshops for gay and same-sex attracted men. It provides a confidential and welcoming environment for participants to socialise while learning more about their sexuality and well-being. These workshops are facilitated by volunteer peer facilitators to enhance peer-to-peer learning.

Topics covered include: negative stereotypes, homophobia, coming out, relationships, HIV stigma and sexual health.

The workshops are:

  • FREE
  • Interactive and dynamic
  • A safe space for discussion and sharing stories
  • Run on a Wednesday or Thursday night from 7 – 10 PM
  • Have 8 – 12 participants and 2 – 3 volunteer peer facilitators

Momentum

“Am I too old to come out?”

“Is there a place for me in the community?”

“I was married and I just recently came out; is this the right place for me?”

Momentum is a free, six-week workshop for same-sex attracted men aged 27 years and above to socialise in a welcoming and confidential environment. It also offers an interactive and informative environment for the group to talk about issues relating to sexuality and well being. These include homophobia, coming out, self-esteem, relationships, HIV stigma and sexual health.

Some feedback from recent participants:

“I made a few new friends in the workshop. I have also realised that I should be happier with myself. I’m more comfortable with my sexuality now.”

“I gained a sense of community and acceptance with myself as a gay man. The workshop also helped to breakdown the stigma associated with HIV-positive people.”

“The sexual health session is really helpful to understand how to have safer sex in today’s world.”

Relationships

“What do I want from a relationship?”

“Is there a better way to communicate to my partner?”

“Relationship agreement, is that some sort of a contract?”

Relationships workshop is for same-sex attracted men of all ages and relationship status to get together and learn more about relationships. This interactive and informative workshop is aimed to develop your relationship skills, such as communication, conflict resolution, and rights and responsibilities in a relationship. It also explores sexual health in a relationship and sero-disco relationship.

“The communication and conflict skills provide helpful and positive ways to look at the way we operate, with practical suggestions of ways to communicate.”

“Relationship Agreement is something completely new to me and it’s something I’d like to try in a future relationship.”

“Having HIV-positive speakers further cemented my view that HIV-positive person is not someone to be afraid of and I could have a relationship with an HIV-positive person.”

Young & Gay

“Is there only one way to be same-sex attracted?”

“Where can I find other young people like myself?”

“I don’t like going out and using apps, where else can I go?”

Young & Gay is a workshop for guys aged 26 years and under who are attracted to other guys. It provides a fun and welcoming environment for you to meet new people and expand your social network. It also offers an interactive and informative space for you and your peers to talk about sexuality and well-being. We talk about negative stereotypes, self-esteem, coming out, relationships, HIV stigma and sexual health.

Gay Asian Proud

Gay Asian Proud (GAP) is a social support network for gay Asian men in Melbourne. The group offers a welcoming and understanding environment for you to meet new people and expand your social network. We organise social events such as yum cha, movies, dinners, picnics, and outings to gay venues. Some of our activities are open to our non-Asian partners and friends. Gay Asian Proud is a diverse group and we have zero tolerance policy on stigma and discrimination.

Talk Asian is a workshop designed specifically for same-sex attracted men of Asian backgrounds, including those who were born in Australia. It offers a welcoming and interactive space for us to talk about issues relating to our sexuality and cultural identity. These include coming out in Asian cultures, maintaining family connection, challenging negative stereotypes, sexual racism, and connecting with the community.

Multicultural and Multifaith Project

The Multicultural and Multifaith Project provides support to culturally and religiously diverse LGBTIQ community groups in Melbourne. We celebrate multiculturalism and acknowledge unique challenges faced by members of multicultural and multifaith communities reconciling different aspects of their identity. We build resilience and cultural pride by working collaboratively in celebration of diversity.

Peer Facilitation Training

Our workshops are run by volunteer peer facilitators who have been through the same journey as the participants. Our facilitators come from diverse backgrounds, including race, religion, sexuality, age, and HIV status. They play an important role guiding their peers, embracing their sexuality while learning about sexual health. Without a doubt, our peer facilitators contribute to the long running success of the Peer Education Program. 

We offer the Peer Facilitation Training to incoming volunteers to provide them with the required skills and knowledge in group facilitation. The training spans over several sessions ensuring that our volunteers are well equipped to work with their peers discussing sensitive topics such as coming out, homophobia, and HIV stigma.

Topics that are covered in the training include:

  • Effective group facilitation, including facilitation micro skills
  • Adult education and peer education framework
  • Communication, including active listening and conflict resolution
  • Sexual health
  • Mental health
  • Stigma and discrimination
